This 1911 photo by Gertrude Bell shows an interior view of the Mor Cyriacus church, looking east across the vaulted-roof nave to the apse.Mor Cyriacus is one of a number of Syriac Christian churches dating from the 4th-6th century AD. Many have unique architectural features combining Late Roman building methods with Byzantine elements, with later features from the Medieval and Crusader periods.Gertrude
Bell first reported these sites in
detail in 1909-11, documenting them with photography and extensive notes
