Tur Abdin: Mor Azaziah Church, north facade (1909 photo)

Tur Abdin: Mor Azaziah Church, N facade (Bell Arch.M202 NcU)

This 1909 photo by Gertrude Bell shows the north facade of Mor Azaziah Church at Tur Abdin in southeast Turkey. The plain vaulted form dates from the Byzantine period.

Mor Azaziah is one of a number of Syriac Christian churches which date from the 4th-6th century AD. Many of these have unique architectural features combining Late Roman building methods with Byzantine elements.

Gertrude Bell first reported these sites in detail in 1909, documenting them with photography and extensive notes and maps. The Gertrude Bell Archive is at Newcastle University in England.
