Tur Abdin: Mor Augin Cloister, southwest corner (1909 photo)

Tur Abdin: Mor Augin Cloister, SW corner (Bell Arch.M124 NcU)

This 1909 photo by Gertrude Bell was taken at the Mor Augin Cloister at Tur Abdin in southeast Turkey.  The image shows the southwest part of the cloister. In the center is an infilled archway, and a re-used column with Corinthian capital.

Mor Augen Monastery was founded in the 4th century AD, named for Mor Awgen. the traditional founder of Syrian monasticism. Once housing 350 monks, since 2011 the monastery has been restored and reopened.

Mor Augen is one of a number of Syriac Christian monasteries and churches which date from the 4th-6th century AD. Many of these have unique architectural features combining Late Roman building methods with Byzantine elements.

Gertrude Bell first reported these sites in detail in 1909, documenting them with photography and extensive notes and maps. The Gertrude Bell Archive is at Newcastle University in England.
