Tur Abdin: Region of Early Christian Monasteries (Athena Review Image Archive)

The Tur Abdin region of southeastern Turkey contains a number of Syriac Christian monasteries and churches which date from the 4th-8th century AD. Many of these have unique architectural features combining Late Roman building methods with Byzantine elements.
Many of these sites were abandoned due to persecutions of Christians. Some have recently been restored and are open to visitors.
