This 1909 photo by Gertrude Bell gives a panoramic view of the Deir-es-Salib Monastery at Tur Abdin in southeastern Turkey. The Tur Abdin region, located near the Syrian border contains a number of Syriac Christian monasteries and churches which date from the 4th-6th c. AD. Many of these have unique architectural features combining Late Roman building methods with Byzantine elements.Many of these sites were abandoned due to persecutions of Christians.
