This overhead satellite image shows the large Roman fort or castle of Zenobia, located on the western (right) bank the Euphrates River at the modern town of Halibyah. The Euphrates formed the eastern edge of the Roman limes or frontier in Syria. A number of building foundations can be seen within the confines of the castle, whose southern wall is over 1 km. in length, comprising a fortified town.
