Dura-Europos: Satellite view of the Roman and Parthian site

This overhead satellite view shows the ancient city of Dura Europos which lies along the Euphrates River, near the modern town of as Salhiyah. The site was excavated in the 1920s and 30s in a Yale University project directed by Rostovtzeff. A number of buildings showed good preservation, with mural paintings preserved in both houses and temples, including Roman shrines, synagogues, and early Christian churches
The site has been severely looted in past few years during ongoing wars in Syria.
