Syracuse: Gold coins of Persephone (274-215 BC)

Syracuse: Gold coins of Persephone (Mus.Orsi Syracuse; Photo: Athena Review 2004)

These four coins were minted in Syracuse in the reign of Hieron II. All have heads of the goddess Persephone facing left, wearing a grain wreath in long hair, and a T-shaped poppy behind. On the reverse, all have a chariot with the legend IERONOS.

Coin A dates from 274-269 BC, while coins B-D are later ( 220-217 BC). Coin B retains the earlier chariot motif, while C and D have reversed the chariot. The facial rendering also changes.
