Syracuse: Sanctuary of Demeter, alabastron votive figurine

Syracuse: alabastron votive figurine (Mus.Orsi Syracuse; Photo: Athena Review 2004)

This mold-made alabastron or perfune jar is in the form of a female figurine, possibly a goddess. It was found in the sanctuary of Demeter in Syracuse. The figure wears a folded robe or himation,  with the spout in the form of a Polos or headdress.

The female figure is holding a bird, possibly a dove, a trait associated with cult of Demeter and Persephone. The figurine was used as a votive offering to Demeter.
