Sicily: figurine of seated Goddess

Sicily: figurine of seated goddess (Met.Mus.; Photo: Athena Review 2004)

This small seated figurine from the 5th century BC resembles a Late Archaic Kore or statue of a young  woman. She is  dressed in a short himation or cloak with a diagonal neckline over a chiton or blouse, and wears a low headdress (polos) over a veil.

Many such figurines were used as votive offerings to the cult of Demeter and Persephone at several temple sites in Sicily, including Syracuse.
