Syracuse: Map of archaeological zone

Syracuse: Map of the archaeological zone (Athena Review)

Syracuse was founded in 733-4 BC by Greek settlers from Corinth and Tenea. The city prospered and was allied with Sparta and Corinth. By the 7th - 6th century BC  it became the most powerful city in Magna Graecia in the Mediterranean.

The map of the archaeological zone includes both Greek and Roman theaters, the Hellenistic altar of Hieron, the Roman tomb of Archimedes, the Medieval church of San Nicolo, and several quarries.
