In this relief, the goddess Artemis is shown watching Acteon, a Theban leader, being devoured by his own dogs. Acteon has been punished by Artemis, who turns him into a stag. In one version of the myth, Acteon had surprised Artemis during her bath.In another version, he claimed to be a better archer than the goddess. In either case, he must face mortal punishment.
