Selinunte: Acropolis, Temple C, metope relief of Herakles and Cercopi

Selinunte: Temple C, Metope relief of Herakles (Arch.Mus.Palermo; Photo: Athena Review 2004)

Heracles holds two captive Cercopi, tied upside down on a yoke. The Cercopi were an ungoverned people living around Ephesus, known for robbing and murdering travellers. Hercules, said to have captured many Cercopi, here brings a pair to Queen Omphalos.

Zeus later changed the Cercopi into monkeys. The sculpture retains traces of the painted geometric motifs that covered part of the temple exterior.
