Selinunte: Shrine of Demeter, siren alabastron

Selinunte: Shrine of Demeter, siren alabastron (Mus.Arch.Palermo; Photo:Athena Review 2004)

Selinunte: Shrine of Demeter Malophoros, alabastron of a Siren, dated 650-500 BC.

This perfume jar or alabastron is in the form of a Siren (a bird with the head of a woman). In this case it may represent a composite of the head of Kore/Persephone and the body of a dove, a bird sacred to that goddess.
