This view shows portions of the Sanctuary of the Cthonic (Underworld) Divinities, devoted to the worship of Demeter, Persephone, and Kore. The Sanctuary included sacrificial pits, where votive figurines of the goddesses and other offerings were placed. At the rear of the image is the so called "Temple of the Dioscuri " (Castor and Pollux), retaining is its northwest corner with four columns and an entablature, actually a modern reconstruction from the early 19th century. It was a Doric temple six columns wide and thirteen columns long, dating from the mid 5th century BC. |
