Agrigento: Hellenistic Altar with Greek inscription

Agrigento: Altar with inscription (Mus.Agrigento; photo Athena Review 2004)

This small stone altar with a stepped base and architectural moldings has a dedication of the Hellenistic age (4th-3rd centry BC) in Greek letters in two lines;

"To the Savior Goddess of the Many Crowns." The dedication is repeated again in the lower portion of the altar's side in lighter incision, and with the name of the dedicant Nikomedes added at a later time.

The so-called "Goddess of the Many Crowns" was a nymph in the court of Demeter and Kore, whose cult is attested also in other shrines, such as that at Butara in the province of Caltanisetta.
