In this white calyx crater by the Boston Phile Painter (inv.120693), one of the two sides of the vessel shows this scene with two women, perhaps in the act of parting. The figure on the left holds a staff, while the woman at right wears a black cape and skirt. Some archaeologists at Agrigento have interpreted the two women as Demeter and her daughter Persephone.Below the figures is a meander frieze. The simple but elegant linear style of the artist is reminiscent of that used on white ground lekythoi by the Achilles Painter. This calyx crater dates to 440-430 BC. |
