Tivoli:  Temple of Vesta (1745 painting)

Tivoli: The Temple of Vesta (Dietrich 1745)

The circular temple, dating from the Late Republican period, has been attributed to both Vesta and the Sibyls, although its ancient dedication remains unknown. It had 18 fluted Corinthian columns, of which ten remain, and frieze reliefs also preserved.

The artist, Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich (1712–1774), includes the Temple in a larger, Romantic composition painted in 1745, showing its position above ancient vaulted structures, some now used as stables.
