Tivoli: Hadrian's Villa, Piazza Aurea (Bell 1910; Gertrude Bell Archive 085 NcU)
This 1910 photograph by Gertrude Bell shows the Piazza d'Oro or Golden Square at the southeast end of the Imperial Palace at Hadrian's Villa. The Piazza is entered through the octagonal vestibule. On the southeast side is an intricate series of exedrae and nymphaea. The central of these may have been used as a summer triclinium or dining area.
