This 1910 photograph by Gertrude Bell of the Basilica at Hadrian's Villa shows an area with cross vaulting. The walls are comprised of opus reticulatum (diagonal layers of diamond-shaped tiles), intersperced with horizontal bands of thin bricks or tiles, a technique also used in stone masonry by Roman builders throughout the Empire. The Basilica was built ca. AD 125-135.. |
