Rome: Via Appia, Vigna Randanini Catacomb, painting of Pegasus (BSR Parker Archive)

On the Appian Way were a number of ancient catacombs for both Christian and Jewish burials.

This albumen print by John Parker, taken in 1864-6, shows a painting of Pegasus, the flying horse. It forms part of a mural on the walls of a cubiculum in the Jewish catacombs at Vigna Randanini.
