Rome: Via Appia, Arch of Drusus (1756 etching)

Rome: the Arch of Drusus on via Appia (Piranesi 1756)

The Arch of Drusus was built as part of the aqueduct system serving the Baths of Caracalla.

In this 1756 drawing by Piranesi, a section of the water conduit, called a spicum (A), is shown over the arch, which lies at the start of the Appian Way. At left and right (B,C) are remains of the lower arches of the aqueduct.
