Rome: Forum, Temple of Portunus (1850 photo)

Rome: The Temple of Portunus (photo: Flacheron Archive 1850)

Built in 100-80 BC, the Temple of Portunus (shown in this 1850 calotype by Flacheron) was among the buildings used in commercial transactions in the Forum Boarium or cattle market. It is located right beside the round Temple of Hercules Victor.

Previously, this small Ionic temple was known as the Temple of Fortuna Virilis. Both it, and the Casa di Rienzi behind it, were converted to apartments and other uses during the Middle Ages.
