Rome: Castillum called Temple of Minerva Medica (etching 1764)

Rome: Castillum known as Temple of Minerva Medica (Piranesi 1764)

This domed structure, once thought to be a temple of Minerva the healing goddess, is now identified as an early 4th century AD nymphaeum or castillum connected to aqueducts which supplied the city with water. The dome shown in Piranesi's 1764 drawing, some 33 meters high, collapsed in 1828.

The ruin is located between the Aurelian Wall and the Via Labicana, along the modern street Via Giolitti.
