Rome: Plan of Hercules Victor; Tivoli, Temple of Vesta (1515 drawing)

Rome: Temple of Hercules Victor; and Tivoli, Temple of Vesta (Comer 1515; Ashby BSR 1902, fg.23)

This 1515 drawing by Comer shows two round temples. These include (at top) the Roman Temple of Hercules Victor, in the Forum Boarium; and below, the Temple of Vesta at Tivoli.

The temple names have been modified over time and require some clarification. The round temple at top was formerly also called the Temple of Vesta but is now identified as Temple of Hercules Victor. The smaller temple below, meanwhile, is now called the Temple of Vesta (due to its round form), although in the 1515 drawing it is named the Temple of Tiberius at Tivoli.

The drawings are attributed to Andreas Comer, a German cleric from Bamberg who died in Rome in 1527. His drawings, at the John Soane Collection in London, were published by Thomas Ashby of the British School at Rome.
