Rome: Temple of Antoninus and Faustina relief (16th c. drawing)

Rome: Drawing of relief from Temple of Antoninus and Faustina (Ashby BSR 1902 fg.100)

This 16th century drawing represents a portion of the frieze relief on the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina in the Roman Forum (then called the "Campo Vaccino"). This shows a griffin, a winged mythological creature, standing amid swirling floral motifs.

The image is by an unknown artist whose drawings, published with those of Andreas Coner by the British School at Rome, provide a series of valuable, if little known, drawings of ancient and Renaissance architecture.
