Rome: Plan from Circus Maximus to Baths of Titus (1551 map)

Rome: Plan from Circus Maximus to Baths of Titus (Ligorio 1551, Antiquaeo Urbis Imago)

Ligorio's map of ancient Rome (Antiquae urbis imago) combined his detailed observations of sites with recreation of various buildings. This section, packed with  labelled, accurate imagery, begins with the Circus Maximus at bottom and extends to the Baths of Trajan and Titus at top. In between, it shows the Colosseum and part of the Forum, and the Palatine. Sections of the Aqua Claudia aqueduct are also seen.

Pirro Ligorio (1513-1583) was an Italian architect whose drawings of ancient Roman buildings are a major resource for researchers on the history of the city.
