Rome: Palatine Hill, Stadium of Domitian, nymphaeum (2001 photo)

Rome: Palatine Hill, Stadium of Domitian, nymphaeum in garden (photo: Athena Review 2001)

The Stadium of Domitian, built in AD 70-80, was used as a monumental garden as well as a stadium,

This nymphaeum-like structure with three small arches, built of brick and cobbles, lies at one end of the stadium of Domitian. Several relief sculptures are incorporated into the facade.

A great number of sculptures have been found throughout the stadium, strongly suggesting it was also used as a garden. Most of the sculptures are now in the Palatine Museum.
