The Palace of Augustus (Domus Augustana) was begun in the late 1st century BC and became the residence of the first Roman emperor. It was destroyed in the fire of Nero, then rebuilt by Domitian in AD 85. Afterwards it survived until 1775, when much of it was dismantled and sold.

Besides the residential complex were libraries and the Temple of Apollo. Today, only three downstairs rooms on the north side of the courtyard remain relatively intact. Adjoining this is the Convent of the Visitation.
