Roman Forum: View from Capitoline Hill
Roman Forum (after Lanciani 1897).
The
Forum was the center of Roman civic life for over five hundred years,
and contains multiple layers of ancient buildings in the midst of
modern Rome. This photo, which looks east through the Forum, shows the
site during late 19th century excavations.
At front left is the
Arch of Septimius Severus, with the Column of Phocas at center, and
column bases from the Basilica Julia at right. In the far distance is
the Arch of Titus, beyond which lies the Colosseum. The source of the
image is Rudolfo Lanciani, an archaeologist and engineer who worked in
Rome in the 1880s and 90s, and wrote widely-read accounts of the
findings.
