This early view of the Forum by Frederick Flacheron faces north, toward the arch of Septimius Severus and the buildings on the Capitoline Hill behind it. It shows a number of light-colored oxen grazing in the foreground, with several oxcarts also visible.
At the time this image was made (1850), the forum area was still regularly used as a pasture, although excavations of ancient Roman remains had recently begun.
