Rome: Forma Urbis Roma, plans of temples and gladiator school (Vatican Mus.)


These 16th century drawings from Codex Vatican 3439, fol.135 are copies of fragments of the Forma Urbis Roma, a detailed city map made on marble in about AD 200, of which today only fragments survive.  They include plans of temples (1) and of the Ludus Magnus (3), a gladiator school. 

Many of the marble map fragments still extant in the 16th century are today lost. The only extant one of this trio is the Ludus Magnus (#3). from table 17. The other two are known from drawings on Cd.Vat 3439; #1 is from table 58, while #2 is from table 31.
