Rome: Castellum aquae of Trajan (1860s photo)

Rome: Castellum aquae in Caelian Hill (Parker 1860s, BSR Parker Archive)

The castellum aquae was a domed structure serving as a water redistribution station, often also used as a public nymphaeum (fountain) or piscina (pool).

This example from the time of Trajan (AD 98-115), photographed by Parker in the 1860s,  is located on the Caelian Hill, near the Porta Capena.
