Rome: Baths of Diocletian (1550 etching)

Rome: The Baths of Diocletian (Cock 1550)

The Baths were built by Diocletian and Maximius in AD 306. In the sixteenth century, a portion was converted into the Basilica of Sta. Maria degli Angelli by Michaelangelo.

The Baths represented substantial Roman ruins, and were drawn by many artists between the Renaissance and 18th century. This drawing by the Flemish artist and publisher Hieronymous Cock shows repeated structural elements of superimposed vaults found at the Baths of Diocletian, as well as in other large structures such as basilicas and aqueducts.

This is one of a number of drawings of ancient Roman sites which Cock published as a collection of etchings in 1550.
