This drawing from about 1550 shows two large structures, the Basilica of Maxentius at left (A; also called basilica of Constantine), and a portion of the underlying Domus Area or Golden House, built by Nero (B).This part of the Golden House has a wide staircase leading up to a peristyle and courtyard.Pirro Ligorio (1512-1583) was both architect and archaeologist, who supervised antiquities in Rome and excavated at Tivoli.
