Rome: The Arch of Titus, relief of Roma (2001 photo)

Arch of Titus with relief of Roma (photo: Athena Review 2001).

The arch of Titus was built by the emperor Domitian to honor the campaigns in Judea by his sons Titus and Vespacian. The single arch has marble columns and two large reliefs, one of Roma and Victory marching on Jerusalem in AD 70; the second, the return with spoils of war.

The first-mentioned marble relief inside the arch, shown here, portrays legionaries marching to battle, followed by the goddess Roma guiding the imperial quadriga (4-horse chariot) with the winged figure of victory and Titus, commander of the Judean campaign.
