Rome: The Arch of Titus, relief of Jerusalem spoils (2001 photo)

Arch of Titus with relief of triumphal procession (photo: Athena Review 2001).

The arch of Titus was built by the emperor Domitian to honor the campaigns in Judea by his sons Titus and Vespacian. The single arch has marble columns and two large reliefs, one of Roma and Victory marching on Jerusalem in AD 70; the second, the return with spoils of war.

The second marble relief inside the arch, shown here, portrays a triumphal procession of Roman legionaries carrying spoils from Jerusalem, including trumpets from Herod`s Temple and a 7-branched Menorah, captured in the campaign in Judea led by Titus.
