Rome: Forum, Arch of Titus (painting 1742)

Rome: Forum, painting of the Arch of Titus (Canaletto 1742)

The Arch was built by the Emperor Domitian shortly after the death of his older brother Titus. Located in the southeast corner of the Forum on the Velian Hill, it measures 13.5 m wide and 15.4 m high. When Canaletto painted it in 1742, it was unrestored.

The inscription translates as, "The Roman Senate and People (dedicate this) to the divine Titus Vespasianus Augustus, son of the divine Vespasian."
