Rome: Forum, Arch of Septimius Severus (1742 drawing)

Pompeii: The Arch of Septimius Severus (Canaletto 1742)

The Severan Arch at the north end of the Forum was built in AD 203 to celebrate victories in the Parthian campaigns by Septimius Severus and his sons Caracalla and Geta.

This 1742 painting by Canaletto shows that, in the mid 18th-century, due to the high ground level that had accumulated in the1500 years since its erection, the arch was by then half buried. It remained that way until the 1850s-1860s when archaeological excavations began in the Forum.
