Rome: Arch of Gallienus in Servian Wall (Piranesi 1757)


Dedicated to emperor Gallienus, the arch in the Servian Wall was built in AD 262 by a private citizen, M. Aurelius Victor. Located at the start of via Labicana, a major street, this arch replaced the older Porta Esquilina.  There is a 2-line inscription

The Piranesi drawing also shows aqueducts in the Esqualine Hill: (B) a castellum of the Aqua Julia; C) a gate in the the Aqua Marcia; (D) the Aqua Claudia at Porta Maggiore; and E) Neronian arches of the Aqua Claudia.
