Rome: Aurelian Wall, Amphitheater of Castrense (1860s photo)

Rome: Amphitheater of Castrense in Aurelian Wall (Parker 1860s, BSR Parker Archive)

The lesser known, second amphitheater of Rome, named the Amphitheater of Castrense, was built by Septimius Severus in about AD 200. The three-story, ellipse-shaped theater (88 x 75.80 m), was built mainly of brick, with travertine decorations.

This albumen print by Parker from the 1860s shows arches of the outer walls which were bricked up when the building was incorporated into the Aurelian Wall in AD 270-5. The upper stories were demolished in the 16th century, and today the interior is an abbey garden.
