Rome: Amphitheater of Castrense (1761 etching)

Rome: Amphitheater of Castrense with parts labelled (Barbault 1761)

This drawing by Barbault gives a sense of the scope of the Aurelian wall, built in AD 271, with the ground level in front of it significantly lowered in some places. Several of the towers are visible at left.

At right center is the rounded form of the amphitheater Castrense, built ca. AD 200 by Septimius Severus, and 70 years later largely demoished and buillt into the wall.
