Ostia: Temple of Hercules (I 15, 5)

Ostia: Temple of Hercules (photo: Athena Review 2001)

This late 2nd century BC temple (31 x 16 m) is the largest in the Republican sacred area of Ostia. The temple, with a podium of tufa blocks, had a facade with six columns and cella or shrine with small brick columns and a black and white mosaic floor.

The marble statue is of C. Cartilius Poplicola, a three-time Duumvir or administrator of Ostia in the 1st centuru BC. His father may have built the temple; Poplicola is a by-name meaning Friend of the People.
