Ostia: Building of the Charioteers, Venus painting

Ostia: Painting of Venus, Building of the Charioteers (photo: Athena Review 2001)

The Building of the Charioteers was built during the first years of the reign of Antoninus Pius (ca. 140 AD).

This image from a room in the Charioteer Building shows a fragmentary mural painting of Venus rising from the sea, surrounded by various sea creatures including fish, eels, and a lobster, as well as two smaller human-like figures which may also be deities. The marine detail is relatively well executed, and is reminiscent of that in a mosaic from the House of the Faun at Pompeii, now in the Naples Museum of Archaeology..
