The Latin inscription read (with typical Roman abbreviations):
"M[arcus] Claudio C[aius] . F[ilius]. Marcello/ Patrono"
"To Marcus Claudius Marcellus, the son of Gaius, Patron."
Marcellus was the nephew of the emperor Augustus, and was a patron of the colony at Pompeii. A statue of Marcellus also stood here.
