Pompeii: Temple of Jupiter, altar

Pompeii: Altar of the Temple of Jupiter (photo: Athena Review)

Located on the north end of the Forum, the Temple of Jupiter probably dates from the pre-Roman period, with columns of tuff covered with white stucco. The large cella is Etruscan in design.

With the reign of Augustus (31 BC-AD 14) the temple beame a capitolium. The cella walls were painted with murals in the 2nd style. A head of Jupiter was found here dedicated in AD 37.

This frontal view faces east across the Temple platform, with the altar in the foreground.
