Pompeii: Temple of Isis, fresco of priest with sistrum

Pompeii: Temple of Isis, fresco of priest (Mus.Arch Naples; photo: Athena Review)

The Temple of Isis, rebuilt between AD 62 and 79, contained numerus paintings in the 4th style.  These include fanciful landscapes with villas, temples, and exotic plants and animals. Another common theme was naval battles with triermes.

This 4th style painting from the Temple of Isis portrays a white-robed priest with a bronze sistrum (rattle). The priest image resembles several other examples from the same temple that are now in the National Museum of Archaeology in Naples.
