The House of the Faun (VI 12, 2) is the largest in Pompeii and originated in 180-170 BC during the Samnite period.

Two niches with relief pediments, columns, and red-painted interiors have been built into the wall as household shrines (aediculae) for statues of Lares or ancestral spirits. Variants of these shrines are widespread in Pompeii and other Roman towns.
