Herculaneum: Plan of the House of the Great Portal (Athena Review)
The
layout of the House of the Great Portal is somewhat unusual, in
that it lacks an atrium. The Rooms instead open onto a hallway, with a
small courtyard providing light. The cubiculae or bedrooms have 4th
style paintings, and the triclinium has a large Bacchanalian scene.
The building also had a separate shop or taberna with stairs to an apartment in back, probably a rental property.
