Dating
from the 2nd century BC, the Samnite House in Ins. V, 1-2 is one of the
oldest buildings in Herculaneum. The tufa columns of the portal have
Corinthian capitals carved n low relief. The fauces or entrance hall
has a red and white mosaic floor with a geometric pattern.Located
on the North side of Decumanus Minor, the house originally occupied all
of the southern part of Insula V. It included a 3-sided peristyle,
perhaps with a garden, on the site of the later House of the Great
Portal. |
